CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb saw its two-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon, as Charleston Southern stifled the Runnin' Bulldogs in a 16-0 win at Buccaneer Field.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-7, 2-2 Big South) endured one of its most difficult offensive games of the season, managing only 65 yards in the opening half as Charleston Southern (4-5, 2-2 Big South) built its 16-0 lead by halftime.
The second half provided little relief. Gardner-Webb's defense was able to keep the margin at two scores – but the Runnin' Bulldogs couldn't chip away at the lead, not crossing the 100-yard mark offensively until the fourth quarter.
The scoring was infrequent for Charleston Southern in the first half, as Tyler Tekac connected on a 50-yard field goal to cap a 42-yard scoring drive with 5:13 left in the first quarter and Terrance Wilson capped a 51-yard drive with a short touchdown run with 11:24 left before halftime.
A Gardner-Webb interception proved costly late in the second quarter, as Wilson scored from three yards out with 5:45 left in the half to cap a short, 32-yard scoring march.
Charleston Southern, which had only six team sacks through eight games in 2018, managed seven on Saturday. The Buccaneers also picked off a pair of passes and kept Gardner-Webb off balance until the final buzzer.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the game with 198 yards offensively, with two quarterbacks combining to complete just 10-of-29 passes for 126 yards and two interceptions. Gardner-Webb ran for 72 yards on 41 carries, with
A.J. Moses leading that effort – gaining 33 yards on 12 attempts.
Charleston Southern did just enough offensively to pick up the win, gaining 295 yards on 65 plays. The Buccaneers churned out 203 yards on the ground, with Wilson proving to the be the most valuable man on that side of the ball with 137 yards and two scores on 19 carries.
Freshman quarterback Christian Reid picked up his first start for CSU, completing 8-of-21 passes for 92 yards and gaining 36 on the ground.
Gardner-Webb made several nice adjustments on defense to keep Charleston Southern off the board in the second half. The Runnin' Bulldogs were paced by end
John Singleton, who finished with nine total tackles (seven solo), three tackles for loss and a sack. The former Middle Creek (N.C.) High standout also had a quarterback pressure.
Shai Thomas (seven tackles),
Triston Dozier (five tackles) and
Darien Reynolds (five tackles) also led the defensive charge for Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb will close out the 2018 season next weekend at home, hosting Monmouth at 1:30 pm on Senior Day (November 17). The game will stream live on ESPN3.
