November 02, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced its men's soccer All-Conference selections today, which featured four Runnin' Bulldogs – Oskar Wang, Jack Hoey, Simen Olsen and Petter Johansen.
Wang (Neshollen, Norway / Vormsund NTG Kongsvinger) headlined Gardner-Webb's honorees by being named to the first-team. Hoey (Bournemouth, UK / Burlington County CC) and Olsen (Oslo, Norway / Bjerke VGS) were second-team honorees.
Johansen (Toensberg, Norway / Wang Toppidrett Toensberg), a sophomore, represented the Runnin' Bulldogs on the All-Academic team.
Below are details on each of GWU's selections and their accomplishments.
Oskar Wang: First-Team All-Big South Conference
Two of Wang's three goals in the 2018 regular season came against Big South opponent Radford. In that match, Wang singlehandedly led the Runnin' Bulldogs past the Highlanders, accounting for both goals in the 2-1 win. He scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute, and netted the game-winner in the 48th minute after Radford was able to equalize. Facing a five-man wall, Wang fooled the entire Highlander's defense and instead of shooting over the wall, sent the ball around the left side and into the net. For his performance in that contest, he was named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week. Wang appeared in 12 matches and logged nearly 1,000 minutes in the regular season. Last season, Wang was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.
Jack Hoey: Second-Team All-Big South Conference
For the second consecutive season, Hoey earned All-Conference honors from the Big South. He was the Runnin' Bulldogs leading goal scorer this season, scoring seven times, including twice in a match on two occasions. Hoey earned Player of the Week honors after scoring two goals in a 3-0 win over Big South opponent USC Upstate.
In the match against Upstate, Hoey converted in the 19th minute off a header and again early in the second half when he dribbled the length of the field and worked his way through the Upstate defense for what was his third goal of the season at the time. He would go on to score four more times over the course of the regular season, including the game-winner in the season finale, a 2-1 win over UNC Asheville, which clinched a Big South tournament berth for Gardner-Webb. He finished in the top-five in the Big South in seven of nine statistical categories for attacking players, including tied for second in game-winning goals and third in goals and goals per game.
Simen Olsen: Second-Team All-Big South Conference
Olsen was named a Second-Team All-Big South member for the second straight season thanks to his defensive efforts on the pitch. He started 14 games in the regular season and led the team in minutes with 1,287. He contributed to a pair of shutouts on defense, including one against a Big South opponent, USC Upstate. Olsen logged a season-high 110 minutes in a non-conference match against Wofford and played the full match in Gardner-Webb's final seven regular season contests. For his career, Olsen has appeared in all 47 contests and has earned the starting nod in all 47.
Petter Johansen: Big South All-Academic Team Member
Johansen was named a member of the Big South Conference's All-Academic team. The sophomore Computer Science major has a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and made an impact on the field, scoring twice and appearing in all 15 matches. The Toensberg, Norway native scored his first goal of the season in a non-conference match at George Mason and netted his second goal in Wednesday's regular season finale at UNC Asheville.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will now turn their attention to Big South postseason play as they travel to face the fourth-seeded Campbell Fighting Camels on Sunday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
