CLARION, Pa. – Gardner-Webb picked up wins at 157 and 174 pounds Friday night, but fell by a 42-9 score to Clarion in a non-conference dual to open the 2018-19 season.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind early, with the Golden Eagles earning wins by forfeit at 125, pin at 133, and major decision at 141 and 149.
 
With his team trailing 20-0, redshirt-senior Tyler Marinelli earned Gardner-Webb's first win of the evening, securing a 5-3 decision over Mike Bartolo at 157.
 
Clarion would take a tech fall decision at 165 to push its lead to 25-3.
 
At 174, Kyle Homet would defeat Taylor Cahill, getting a takedown in overtime to pick up the sudden fall victory to set the score at 25-9.
 
The Golden Eagles would go on to take the remaining matches at 184, 197, and 285, sealing the team win.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow, taking part in the 2018 Clarion Open.
