BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The fifth-seeded Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs fell 3-0 in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament on Sunday night, as the No. 4 Campbell Fighting Camels used a single first-half goal and pair of goals in the final period to advance to the semifinals.
"This wasn't the way we wanted to end the season," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "We had a decent number of attempts, , we just weren't able to put one in the back of the net tonight, and they were able to convert some good looks. It's never fun to lose in the tournament. I appreciate the effort of our coaching staff and players this season."
Gardner-Webb (4-11-1) came out firing in the opening period, as
Oskar Wang had a shot on goal less than 80 seconds into the match and earned a corner  kick three minutes later.
Simen Olsen took a header off Wang's corner kick but sent it wide of the net.
Campbell (8-8-2) took three shots following Olsen's header before Wang earned another corner. The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to take an attempt off the corner kick as the Fighting Camels cleared the ball to their attacking third.
After an intense 20 minutes, the pace of the match slowed considerably with Campbell taking the first shot in more than 10 minutes at the 31-minute mark. In the 40
th minute, Campbell's shot hit the post, but two minutes later, they put the Runnin' Bulldogs behind by a single goal as Josh Signey scored his third goal of the year.
The hosts outshot the visitors, 9-3, in the opening period.
In the second half, seniors
Ismael Guerrero and
Jack Hoey attempted to find the back of the net in the 53
rd and 58
th minutes respectively but were unsuccessful.
Campbell, however, extended its lead to two goals in the 61
st minute when Alex Egeonu received a pass from Thibaut Jacquel and chipped a shot into the back left corner of the net.
Following the Fighting Camels' second goal,
Magnus Moldjord and Hoey would take shots within three minutes of each other, but neither player's look was on goal.
Wang took Gardner-Webb's final shot of the match in the 85
th minute, and it was blocked by the Fighting Camels' defense.
Campbell would add a third goal with 1:49 remaining and earn a 3-0 shutout win.
The host team outshout the Runnin' Bulldogs, 14-8, and 5-1 in shots on goal. Each team earned three corner kicks, and the two goalkeeper's combined for three saves, with GWU's
Daniel Husa making two and Campbell's Samuel Lechuga stopping the lone shot he faced.
Gardner-Webb's season ends with a 4-11-1 overall record. With the win, Campbell will travel to No. 1 seed and nationally ranked High Point for a semifinal matchup at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Statistically, Hoey, a Second-Team All-Big South selection led the Runnin' Bulldogs in goals (7) and points (14), while  Moldjord was the team-leader in assists with three.
Husa and
Grant Glorioso both spent time in goal during the 2018 campaign. Glorioso made 31 saves in six starts, while Husa appeared in 11 matches with 10 starts and stopped 45 shots. The duo combined for two shutouts on the season.
