BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb returns home for its final pre-Christmas test on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Brevard (N.C.) College at 4:30 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-5) have won six in a row and are fresh off a 79-69 win at Georgia Tech Monday night – a game that saw Gardner-Webb lead for the final 22 minutes. Head coach
Tim Craft's squad had its way in the paint once again, scoring 48 points against the taller Yellow Jackets inside the lane and needed only six three-point makes (in 14 tries) to take down its second ACC foe since 2014.
During its current six-game win streak, Gardner-Webb is averaging 46.7 points in the paint and 21.5 points off of turnovers en route to a sizzling 89.7 points per game – just north of the team's overall season scoring average (81.9 ppg).
The current win streak is just shy of the eight-game run that the Runnin' Bulldogs used to close out the 2012-2013 regular season and advance to the Big South semifinals.
Gardner-Webb continues to get balanced scoring, with
David Efianayi and
Jose Perez each leading the way at 16.8 points per game. The duo scored 12 points each in the win at Georgia Tech and combined for 13 assists – setting up
DJ Laster several times for easy buckets inside.
Laster (12.8 ppg) and guard
Nate Johnson (10.9 ppg) also average in double figures for Gardner-Webb, but the Runnin' Bulldogs have eight men on the current roster who have scored in double figures at least once this season. Point guard
Jaheam Cornwall did so at Georgia Tech, coming off the bench to nail 4-of-5 shots for 10 key points.
Brevard (4-5) has moved down to the Division III USA South Conference in recent years and is coming off a conference overtime loss at LaGrange. The Tornados are led by guards Levi Lamb (16.2 ppg) and Qadhafi Turner (10.7 ppg), and average 66.2 points per game as a team so far this season.
Lamb is pumping in 19.7 points per game in three USA South games so far, with Turner (14.3 ppg) also bumping his average in league play.
Wednesday's game will stream live on ESPN+, with Brendan Boylan and Blake McCandless on the call. For more information, including tickets, call Gardner-Webb athletics at (704) 406-4340.
