BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb men's basketball will host its 2018 Education Day Game on Thursday morning, welcoming Bob Jones (S.C.) University to town for an 11:00 am tip.
The game is the second of a four-game home stretch for the Runnin' Bulldogs (4-5) and will stream live on ESPN+, with Brendan Boylan calling the action.
Head coach
Tim Craft's team is coming off a convincing home opener, which saw the 'Dogs outrun Savannah State, 97-60, this past Saturday. As it has often this season, Gardner-Webb put several players in double figures scoring – with
Jose Perez (17),
Nate Johnson (15),
DJ Laster (14),
David Efianayi (13) and
Justin Jenkins (12) each topping that mark.
Perez scored 17 points for the second game in a row and notched the first triple-double of his career with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Bronx, N.Y., freshman was close to the feat by halftime, with nine points, five rebounds and eight assists – as Gardner-Webb stretched its lead to 49-29 by the break.
Jenkins came off the bench to reach a new career scoring high and all 11 men who played in the game scored at least three points.
Gardner-Webb has won two in a row and four of its last six – with two of its five losses so far coming to teams currently ranked in the top-25. That includes an overtime loss at No. 25 Furman on November 13.
A team that was expected to score at a high level hasn't disappointed, with Gardner-Webb averaging more than 82 points per game over its last six. That scoring has been balanced. Four players are averaging in double figures so far and seven different players have reached double figures scoring at least once this season.
Bob Jones (1-7) is coming off a 22-win season itself, and recovered from an 0-7 start to the 2018-2019 season with a 70-64 region win over Toccoa Falls on Tuesday night. The Bruins are led by the duo of Jayson Barnhart (6-3, 236) and Chapman Harwood (5-11, 192), with Barnhart pumping in 19.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game – and Harwood scoring 17.0 points per game.
Sophomore Quiyante Burroughs (6-4, 204) led the way vs. Toccoa Falls with 19 points and seven rebounds. Burroughs is averaging 12.4 points per game so far this season.
