December 06, 2018 | Men's Soccer
AUSTIN, Texas – Gardner-Webb junior forward Brian Stepanek was named a 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Second-Team selection on Thursday morning. The awards are presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA).
Stepanek (Davidson, N.C. / Eagles Nest Academy) has a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in computer science. He becomes the first Gardner-Webb men's soccer player to earn a major academic award since 2009 when Trent Kozman was named the Big South Conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year. Stepanek is first Runnin' Bulldog to be named a COSIDA All-America since Todd Ulrich was a Third-Team selection in 2003.
"What a major honor this is for Brian," said head coach Tony Setzer. "To be recognized on the national level with the highest academic honor given by CoSIDA is a huge accomplishment. We are proud of him for putting the 'student' in student-athlete. He works incredibly hard in the classroom and on the pitch. Brian truly deserves this recognition."
33 men's soccer student-athletes were honored by COSIDA across three teams. Stepanek was one of 16 players with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The entire men's Academic All-America team held a collective 3.91 GPA. Stepanek and Gideon Betz of Campbell University were the two Big South players honored as Google Cloud Academic All-Americans.
On the field, Stepanek has been a member of the GWU soccer program for three seasons. He has played in 23 matches with four starts, recording one goal and one assist. This past season, he saw time in 12 matches and earned the starting once. Stepanek played a season-high 69 minutes against Georgia State. His lone collegiate goal came as freshman in a 1-1 draw against High Point. He recorded his first career assist in a November 2017 win over the Big South's Winthrop Eagles.
