Gardner-Webb Uses Balanced Attack For 102-55 Win Over Johnson & Wales (N.C.)

BOILING SPRINGS – David Efianayi scored 18 points and Jose Perez added 16 to lead Gardner-Webb to a 102-55 win over Johnson & Wales (N.C.) University Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) won their fourth in a row, shooting an efficient 63.4 percent in the second half and putting four men in double figures. Gardner-Webb saw eight different players score at least eight points in the win.

In addition to Efianayi and Perez, Gardner-Webb got 13 points from Nate Johnson and 10 points from Eric Jamison, Jr. DJ Laster, Jaheam Cornwall and Ludovic Dufeal each scored nine points and Christian Turner provided eight points.

Dufeal – a 6-foot-8 freshman – added 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in just 18 minutes off the bench – with five of his boards coming on the offensive end.

Johnson & Wales (4-5), coming off a 93-point performance in a loss at The Citadel, did not find its range consistently enough against a swarming Gardner-Webb defense that forced 22 turnovers and blocked nine shots. The Wildcats shot just 31.0 percent for the game and, of 18 made field goals, only seven came from inside the arc.

Gardner-Webb led by as many as 30 in the first half (43-13) and held a 46-19 edge at the break. The Runnin' Bulldogs got out on the break when available, holding a 22-2 edge in transition points and a 60-8 advantage in paint scoring. Saturday marked the third game in a row that GWU has scored at least 48 points in the paint.

The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 54.1 percent for the game (40-of-74) and made an efficient 10-of-21 from long range (47.6 percent). Gardner-Webb turned it over only nine times and assisted on 23 of 40 made baskets – with eight different players recording at least one assist.

Gardner-Webb also owned a 48-30 edge on the glass and turned 17 offensive caroms into 18 second-chance points. In addition to Dufeal's big day on the backboards, Gardner-Webb got seven boards from Perez and six apiece from Laster and Jamison.

Johnson & Wales got 19 points from guard Majerle Poole, who made 6-of-14 from the field in 31 minutes. Robert Hobson added 11 points, all in the first half, for the Wildcats and Kajuan Madden-McAfee added five points.

Gardner-Webb will break briefly for final exams before hosting Kennesaw State on Thursday, December 13 at 5:00 pm. The game will stream live on ESPN+, with Fabian Fuentes and Brendan Boylan calling the action.
