SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb closed the game on a 10-2 run to capture a 21-11 women's lacrosse win over Wofford Saturday afternoon in Gibbs Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-0) won their season opener for the first time in four tries, set a new program record for goals scored and saw senior
Amanda Steinmuller etch her name in the record books in one more category – scoring a program-record eight goals to go with two assists.
Saturday marked the inaugural game for Wofford (0-1).
Steinmuller got the season started in style, scoring the first goal of the game at the 28:28 mark. After freshman
Talen Francis pushed the lead to 2-0 just 12 seconds later, Steinmuller struck again with 25:21 on the clock for a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Eilish Gately scored the first goal of her career, finding the back of the net with 25:14 left before the half to put Gardner-Webb up 4-0 and force a Wofford timeout.
After the Terriers got on the board, Steinmuller scored twice in a span of 95 seconds to give Gardner-Webb a 6-1 lead.
Lindsey Lippert scored twice over the final 11:41 to lend a hand and Steinmuller gave Gardner-Webb a 9-3 lead with her fifth goal of the half with 7:31 left before intermission.
Wofford scored twice in the final 5:38 to cut the lead to 9-5 at the break.
Gardner-Webb scored quickly to go up 11-5 in the second half, with
Em Dyment scoring off a free position with 28:48 to play and Steinmuller doing the same at the 26:19 mark.
The Terriers tightened things up, going on a 4-0 run on goals from Hannah Mutch, JoJo Frankin, Jessica Borucki and Sophie Smith to trim Gardner-Webb's lead to 11-9 with 21:35 left, but Gardner-Webb regained its poise and pushed further ahead.
Steinmuller halted Wofford's run, connecting on another free position shot with 17:41 to play and assisting on another goal for Dyment just 12 seconds later for a 13-9 edge.
Abby Hanscom answered a Wofford goal with a free position score with 13:57 to play, and added another score off an assist from Steinmuller for a 16-10 edge.
Lippert scored twice to answer another Terrier goal, and followed scores from Francis and Steinmuller with the final score of the game with 26 seconds left – putting a feed from Dyment into the back of the net for the final margin.
Gardner-Webb set a new program mark for shots (42), getting off 23 in the final 30 minutes. GWU also put a program-record 31 shots on goal on a rainy Saturday morning.
Ground balls were even at 23 apiece and Gardner-Webb took advantage of 20 Wofford turnovers. The Runnin' Bulldogs committed 18 turnovers themselves, but limited that number to just five over the final 30 minutes of play.
Steinmuller was efficient, scoring her eight goals on just 10 shots. She added four draw controls and one ground ball in a veteran performance.
Lippert also had a career day, scoring five goals on just seven attempts. She was a perfect 3-for-3 on free positions, controlled four draws and had four ground balls.
Francis, the speedy freshman from Kell (Ga.) High, scored three goals and had four draw controls in her first career start. Hanscom (two goals), Dyment (two goals, one assist) and Gately (one goal, one assist).
Maddie Martin had four draw controls and
Monique Martin finished with four ground balls.
Sophomore keeper
Katie Sylvester was solid between the pipes, finishing with 12 saves on the day.
Wofford finished with 37 shots and got three goals and three assists from Mutch. Sophie Smith also finished with three goals, while dishing off two assists.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action at home on Friday, hosting Cincinnati at 5:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. GWU will also host East Carolina on Sunday (Feb. 18) at Noon.
