Gardner-Webb Outlasts Longwood, 52-41, Tuesday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb had a pair of double-digit scorers, as the Runnin' Bulldogs earned a 52-41 win over Longwood on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Gardner-Webb (16-9, 6-7 Big South) shot just 31.3 percent (20-of-64) for the game, but held Longwood (4-20, 2-11 Big South) to 31.0 percent (13-of-42) on the afternoon.
 
Carley Plentovich led the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively, scoring 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting, as well as a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  Tierra Huntsman added 10 points on a 4-of-18 performance.
 
Micaela Ellis was Longwood's leading scorer with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, as well as a 5-of-5 performance from long distance.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the game with a 9-3 run, capped by a driving layup by Huntsman with 5:47 on the clock.  The Lancers answered with their own 9-3 run, tying the game at 12-12 with 3:10 to go on a three-point basket by Ellis, who had all 12 of Longwood's points at the time.
 
After a Gardner-Webb timeout with 2:55 left in the frame, the 'Dogs scored six unanswered points to close out the first period with a 20-12 advantage.
 
GWU expanded its lead throughout the second period, ending the quarter on an 8-0 run over the final 3:43 to hold a 14-point lead at 33-19 at halftime.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs pushed their advantage to as many as 18 points in the third period after a layup by Alexus Hill with 2:40 on the clock, but the Lancers would score four unanswered points over the remainder of the period to pull back within 14 points at 43-29.
 
A pair of layups by Hill and Huntsman opened the fourth period for Gardner-Webb, giving the team an 18-point lead once again with 8:16 to go, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would go 0-for-12 from the floor for the remainder of the contest.
 
Longwood would pull within 11 points at 49-38 with 2:46 left after a pair of free throws by Stephanie Guihon, but the Lancers would not be able to trim GWU's lead any further, falling by that margin at 52-41.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action this Saturday afternoon at Charleston Southern.  Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm, with the game being broadcast on the Big South Network (www.bigsouthsports.com).
