BELMONT, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team rebounded from a weekend loss with an 8-1 road victory at Belmont Abbey College Tuesday afternoon.
Each doubles contest counted as a single point, and the Runnin' Bulldogs took two of the three matches from the Crusaders.
Paul Hogan and
Stefano Puga won at No. 2 doubles by an 8-2 score, with the duo of
Michael Perry and
Breno Plentz winning in the No. 3 position by an identical score. The Crusaders lone victory of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles.
Gardner-Webb swept all six singles matches on its way to an impressive victory. Freshman
Millen Hurrion saw action at No. 1 singles and won in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Hogan's match went to three sets, but the senior pulled out a victory, 6-3, 6-7, 10-4.
Each Runnin' Bulldog in the No. 3 through No. 6 singles positions won in straight sets. Plentz recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Crusaders Jose Disotuar in the No. 3 spot, while
Adam Schmidt won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.
Johan Fors competed at No. 5 singles and also won by the same score as Plentz.
Anthony Brennan was victorous his match in the No. 6 slot, 6-3, 6-1 over Belmont Abbey's Reinaldo Golindano
"Belmont Abbey is a great team, and the staff there runs a very successful program," said coach
Mike Griffith. "It was a great team win for us and wonderful to have Johan (Fors) back in the mix competing at No. 5 singles. We are a much better team with him on the court."
Gardner-Webb now stands at 4-5 overall and will continue its road swing this weekend, visiting Kennesaw State (2 p.m. Saturday) and Furman (1 p.m. Sunday).
