GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Runnin' Bulldogs men's tennis squad played their fourth consecutive road match on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Furman Paladins, 6-1.
"It was a tough match for us," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "We can't let matches slip away. We were up at No. 2 doubles, and it got away from us. Our singles play was better, but it was too late."
Furman won the first match of the contest at No. 1 doubles, but the duo of
Maximilian Scholl and
Breno Plentz earned a 7-5 victory in the No. 3 position, giving each team a doubles win. In the final doubles contest of the day at No. 2, Gardner-Webb led, but Furman rallied to win, 7-6 (7-2) and clinched the point, taking an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Furman won the first five matches, all in straight sets. Plentz was the lone Runnin' Bulldog to win his match. He defeated the Paladins' Daniel Vishnick, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 4-6 overall. Furman improves to 9-1 on the year and is riding a seven-game win streak.
