Diamond ‘Dogs Blank Navy, 12-0, To Open 2018 Season Friday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Chandler Redmond hit two home runs with three RBI, with the pitching staff combining to allow no runs on six base hits, to propel Gardner-Webb to a 12-0 victory over Navy in the 2018 season opener at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
 
Gardner-Webb (1-0) collected 17 base hits on the afternoon, with each starter getting at least one base knock, and went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position.  Navy (0-1) had just six base hits on the day, all singles, and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
 
A solo home run by Redmond in the second inning gave the Diamond 'Dogs the early advantage, and a sacrifice fly by Eric Jones in the bottom of fifth would give GWU a 2-0 lead.
 
GWU scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Justin Kunz drove in one run on a RBI single to right field, followed by a two-RBI base hit through the right side by Eric JonesLuke Kaesmeyer would drive in a run in the frame on a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
The 'Dogs put the game away in the eighth inning.  Mickey Dugan reached on a walk with one out, and was put in scoring position after a single through the right side by Corey Howard.  Kunz followed with his third base hit of the day to right field, scoring Dugan.  Redmond then sent a two-run shot over the right field wall to set the score at 9-0 with two outs.
 
Jones would collect his third hit of the afternoon on the following at bat, followed by a single through the left side by Kaesmeyer.  Patrick Price drove both of them home with a double to left field, and would advance to third on a base knock by Chris Clary.
 
Ben LaSpaluto drove in the final run of the day, earning his first collegiate hit on an infield single to set the score at 12-0.
 
Mason Fox (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, lasting 5.2 innings, scattering five base hits while fanning five batters.  Tyler Johnson, Aaron Stewart, and Langdon Wilson combined to complete the shutout, allowing just one base hit with two strikeouts over the final 3.1 innings.
 
Redmond (3-for-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI) Kunz (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), and Jones (3-for-4, 3 RBI) paced the Diamond 'Dogs at the plate throughout the afternoon. Kaesmeyer (2-for-4, RBI) and Price (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) each had multiple hits as well.
 
Navy used five different pitchers Friday, with Noah Song (0-1) taking the loss, giving up two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
 
Gardner-Webb will take on Georgetown tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm in Winston-Salem, N.C.
