GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the UNCG Spartans, falling in Greensboro, 4-3.
The Runnin' Bulldogs clinched the doubles point for an early lead despite dropping the first match at the No. 2 position.
Daniela Naupari and
Paula Romero won at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, before
Sandra Bolstad and
Miljana Ristic clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 1
In singles play, Gardner-Webb started off hot as Ristic won the first match at No. 4, defeating UNCG's Corinne Blythe, 6-2, 6-0. The Spartans' Nancy Bridges was victorious over Bolstad at No. 1 singles, cutting the Runnin' Bulldogs lead to 2-1.
Naupari put the 'Dogs up 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3, but the Spartans reeled off three consecutive wins on their home court for the 4-3 victory.
Sarah Rieckmann and Romero lost in two sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles respectively, while
Valentine Limauge was defeated at No. 5
Limauge, a freshman from Belgium, battled for two sets, with each set going into a tiebreaker. In the end, she fell 7-6 (7-3) score in the opening set and 7-6 (7-0) in set two.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 1-4 overall, while UNCG evened its record at 2-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to their home court for the first time in nearly two weeks, on Tuesday, February 20, when they host Queens University of Charlotte. Match time is set for 2 p.m. from Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
