Runnin' Bulldogs Earn Sunday Afternoon Sweep of Western Carolina

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Katie Prebble led the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to a sweep of Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon. GWU won 11-3 in game one, while Maddi Johnson's walk-off walk earned the team a 13-12 victory in game two.

Prebble accounted for five hits, five RBIs and four runs in the games as Gardner-Webb improved to 7-4 in 2018.

Game One: Gardner-Webb 11, Western Carolina 3 (6 innings)

In the opening game, the Catamounts of WCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with four runs of their own.

Kaylee Wacaster's triple scored Andria Booth, while Johnson singled and batted in Wacaster.

After Rachel Cumiskey doubled, freshman Lauren Huffman reached on an error, and Johnson and Cumiskey both crossed home.

Both pitchers retired the side in order in the second before Western Carolina added its second run in the top of the third.

Gardner-Webb was quiet in its half of the third, but scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth when Booth singled, allowing Jenna Wacaster to score. At the end of four innings, the Runnin' Bulldogs led, 5-2.

The Catamounts threatened in the fifth, but Ashley Wark worked her way out of the inning. Prebble's solo shot in the bottom of the inning gave the 'Dogs a 6-2 advantage.

After surrendering a run in the top of the sixth, Gardner-Webb nearly doubled its run total in the latter half of the frame, scoring five runs to win by an 11-6 score.

Trinity Sterrett drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second thanks to Booth's bunt single with one out. K. Wacaster also walked, loading the bases for Johnson. With the count in her favor at 3-1, Johnson singled through the left side, earning two RBIs in the process and giving the home team an 8-3 lead.

Rachel Cumiskey's RBI single gave Gardner-Webb's its ninth run of the game, before Prebble's double down the left field line allowed Cumiskey and Annamarie Warley to score, making the score 11-3 and ending the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wark pitched six innings and gave up three earned runs en route to the win. WCU's Haley Brogden took the loss.

Booth led Gardner-Webb with a team-high three hits. Johnson, Prebble, Cumiskey and Huffman all recorded a pair of hits.

Game Two: Gardner-Webb 13, Western Carolina 12.

The Runnin' Bulldogs and Catamounts combined for 25 runs in game two, with Johnson's walk-off walk giving the home team its seventh victory of the year.

Western Carolina scored in the top of the first, but K. Wacaster singled and came around to score on an error by the Catamounts' left fielder. Weslyn Almond also scored as the 'Dogs took a 2-1 lead.

In the second, Gardner-Webb used four hits, two walks and a steal to push five runs across the plate and take a convincing 7-1 lead through two innings of play.

The inning began with Prebble's solo home run to center field. Back-to-back walks by Sterrett and J. Wacaster were followed by Booth's RBI single. K. Wacaster, a junior, batted in two runners with a single of her own, before stealing second and coming home on Johnson's single up the middle.

Western Carolina cut into the Runnin' Bulldogs lead in the third, using a sacrifice fly and two-run home run to make it a three-run game, 7-4, in favor of Gardner-Webb.

J. Wacaster led Gardner-Webb in the fourth, batting in a run and stealing home as part of a double steal to give the home team a 9-4 lead.

The Catamounts sliced heavily into the 'Dogs lead in the fifth, pulling within a run, 9-8, in part thanks to a three-run home run.

While Gardner-Webb would extend its lead to two runs, 11-9, after six innings, WCU scored three time in the opening half of the seventh, taking its first lead since the first inning.

The Runnin' Bulldogs put on their rally caps in the bottom of the seventh and scored twice to sweep the Catamounts.

It all began with a walk and steal by Prebble, before J. Wacaster singled and took second. Meredith Ferguson pinch hit and drew a walk, before Almond's sacrifice fly tied the game. K. Wacaster was hit by a pitch with two outs bringing Johnson to the plate.

Facing a full count, Johnson and drew a game-winning walk, lifting the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 13-12 win and Sunday afternoon sweep.

Wark earned the her second win of the day, pitching the seventh inning. Lily Hayes took the loss. 

Prebble recorded three hits in the contest, while the Wacaster's both had a multi-hit game.

Gardner-Webb will take its first road trip of the year when it travels to North Carolina A&T State on Wednesday afternoon. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
