BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Isaac Campbell tossed six scoreless innings, while
Chandler Redmond drove in three runs to lead Gardner-Webb to a 6-1 win over Siena on Thursday night.
Gardner-Webb (4-1) scored all of their runs in the first six innings, while Siena (0-4) threatened in the late innings, stranding six runners in the final four innings.
The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in each of the first two innings. Redmond connected with a RBI single in the bottom of the first, and
Mickey Dugan sent a run home with a RBI single in the bottom of the second to give GWU a 2-0 advantage.
Gardner-Webb seized control of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dugan led off the frame with a double to center field, followed by a base hit by
Corey Howard to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Justin Kunz would step up and connect with a double to left-center field to drive Dugan home and put runners on second and third.
That would bring Redmond to the plate, who would bring both runners home on a double to left-center field, giving the 'Dogs a 5-0 edge.
Patrick Price would hit a solo blast in the bottom of the sixth to give Gardner-Webb a 6-0 lead.
The Saints got on the board in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Dan Lowndes with one out, but Siena would wind up stranding two runners in the frame, as well as the in the seventh and eighth innings.
In all, Siena left ten runners on base throughout the evening, while Gardner-Webb abandoned seven runners.
Gardner-Webb had 11 base hits throughout the game, led by Dugan (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), Redmond (2-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI), and Howard (2-for-4).
Siena collected eight hits on the night, led by Jonathan Crimmin (2-for-3, 2 2B) and Joe Drpich (2-for-4).
Campbell (2-0) earned the win, striking out six batters while giving up six base hits in 6.0 scoreless innings of work.
Jordan Hampton (0.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 run) and
Aaron Stewart (0.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs) combined to finish the seventh, while
Carey Spratlin and
Langdon Wilson each tossed a scoreless inning to wrap up the game.
Brendan White (0-2) took the loss for the Saints, allowing five earned runs on 11 base hits in 5.2 innings of work. Tom Sutera tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing no base hits.
The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm. Both games will be broadcast live on the Big South Network (www.bigsouthsports.com).
