BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb scored 14 runs in the first four innings to go on to defeat Siena by a 15-4 score in seven innings in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader.
After allowing three runs in the top of the first, the Diamond 'Dogs answered immediately.
Chandler Redmond stepped up with the bases loaded and no outs and singled to center field to drive in two runs.
Mason Fox would drive one run in on a sacrifice fly ball to deep center field, and Redmond would later score on a wild pitch.
Mickey Dugan would drive in the final run of the frame on a RBI hit to center field, giving GWU a 5-3 lead.
The 'Dogs tacked on three more runs in the second.
Corey Howard led off with a first pitch blast to right field, his first home run of 2018, which was followed by back-to-back hits by
Eric Jones and
Justin Kunz.
Fox would connect with a double to left field to bring in both baserunners to give Gardner-Webb the 8-3 edge.
In the bottom of the third, Jones would hit a three-run home run to left field, his first of the season, setting the score at 11-4 in GWU's favor.
Gardner-Webb would score three more times in the fourth and once more in the sixth.
Bradley Hallman (1-0) earned his first win of the season, allowing four runs on 10 base hits and striking out six batters in 6.0 innings of work.
Patrick Morton tossed a scoreless seventh, allowing one base hit with one strikeout.
Matt Pierce (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Siena, giving up 10 earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Ryan Bellomo pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing three earned runs on four base hits, and Tom Sutera came in to record the final out of the sixth.
Jones (4-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) paced the 'Dogs at the plate, followed by Howard (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI),
Luke Kaesmeyer (2-for-3), Dugan (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and
Taber Mongero (2-for-4, 2B). GWU had 15 total throughout for the nightcap.
Siena had 11 base hits for the evening.
Both teams will meet tomorrow at 2:00 pm to wrap up the series.
