BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second straight match, the Runnin' Bulldogs men's tennis team earned a victory. The squad defeated N.C. Central on Saturday afternoon, 7-0.
"It was great to get a win on the road," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "Winning on the road is never easy, and now our focus is set on UNCG. I was very pleased with the comeback we made at No. 1 doubles as that helped to set the tone for the match. It was an outstanding win for our team."
GWU quickly clinched the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Maximilian Scholl and
Breno Plentz started things off with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while
Stefano Puga and
Paul Hogan were victorious at No. 1 doubles, 6-4. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the third doubles match by forfeit.
In singles play, Scholl, the nation's 98
th-ranked singles player won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Hogan and
Adam Schmidt followed Scholl's lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. Hogan earned 6-2, 6-4 victory, and Schmidt was victorious in a 6-4, 6-0 decision.
Freshman
Millen Hurrion (No. 2 singles) earned the victory 7-5, 6-3, with Plentz winning the final match of the evening, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Puga won by forfeit.
Gardner-Webb improves to 3-4 on the year and will look to even its record at .500 on Sunday against UNCG. Match time is set for 2 p.m. from Greensboro, N.C.
