Gardner-Webb Falls to Troy, 6-3, in Doubleheader Opener Saturday Afternoon

TROY, Ala. - Troy scored a pair of runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go on and take a 6-3 decision over Gardner-Webb in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader.
 
Gardner-Webb (10-5) jumped out to an early lead, as Chandler Redmond doubled to deep left field, driving in a pair of runs to put the 'Dogs on top by a 2-0 score.
 
Troy (10-5) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring its first run on a RBI knock up the middle by Drew Frederic, followed by a RBI hit through the right side by Brody Binder.
 
The Trojans pushed another pair of runs across the plate in the fifth inning to take the lead on a two-run double by Joey Denison that was down the left field line.
 
Troy added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI triple to the right field gap by Rigsby Mosley, followed by a hit to center field by Chase Smartt.
 
GWU attempted a comeback in the ninth, with Redmond leading off the frame with a base hit to the right field gap, followed by a Eric Jones double to left field, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs.
 
Mason Fox hit a fly ball to right field to record the first out, but it wasn't deep enough to send Redmond home to score.  Pinch hitter Brooks Veal hit a ground ball to the second baseman on the first pitch he saw, but that allowed Redmond to score and advanced Jones to third base, putting runners on the corners with two outs.
 
Chris Clary would strike out to end the game.
 
Denison paced the Trojans at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
 
Redmond (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Luke Kaesmeyer (2-for-3) led Gardner-Webb at the plate.
 
Daren Osby (1-0) earned his first win of the season for Troy, allowing two earned runs on six base hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.  Jackson Cofer earned his first save of the year, tossing the final 2.0 innings, giving up a run on two hits while fanning three batters.
 
Bradley Hallman (2-1) took the loss for the Diamond 'Dogs, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits in 7.0 innings of work with five strikeouts.  Langdon Wilson tossed the eighth inning, allowing two earned runs on two base hits with a pair of strikeouts.
