Farmville, Va. – Despite two singles victories, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team lost to Big South Conference opponent Longwood, 5-2, on Saturday morning.
"It's a disappointing loss," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "We have to give credit to Longwood for the way that they played. We are not taking advantage of the situations that we are in during games, and we are a lot better team than we are showing. It starts with me, and we will get back on track. We're excited to take the court on Monday against a good Navy squad."
Gardner-Webb (6-11, 0-4 Big South Conference) won only one of the three doubles matches, as the Lancers (6-6, 1-2 BSC) clinched the point and took an early 1-0 advantage.
At No. 3 doubles,
Ross Gilbert and
Breno Plentz were victorious.
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion lost in a tiebreaker at No. 1, while
Paul Hogan and
Johan Fors were defeated in the No. 2 position, 6-0.
Longwood won the first two singles matches of the day, before Hurrion earned a victory in the No. 2 spot. The reigning Big South Conference Freshman of the Week won in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Adam Schmidt was the only other Runnin' Bulldog to earn a victory in singles competition. The senior played in the No. 5 position and was victorious in a third set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
Scholl (No. 1 singles) lost in a set two tiebreaker, while Hogan (No.3) and Puga (No. 4) lost in two sets. Plentz (No. 6) lost a heartbreaker, losing a super tie breaker, 10-6.
The 'Dogs will return to action on Monday, when they host Navy in a mid-morning match. First serve is set for 11 a.m. from Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
