CLINTON, S.C. – For the second time in the last three Big South Conference matches, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team fell by a 4-3 score, this time to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose.
Although Presbyterian took a 1-0 after clinching the doubles point, the Runnin' Bulldogs found themselves with momentum, winning the first set in four of the six singles matches.
Unfortunately for the visitors from Boiling Springs, they were unable to sustain the momentum and fell to 6-12 overall and 0-5 in Big South Conference play. Presbyterian improved to 5-11 and 1-2 in BSC matches.
"We didn't play with urgency today, and again that is my fault," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "We had momentum, winning the first set in four of the singles contests, but just struggled to finish. Presbyterian deserves a lot of credit. They played well and were better prepared than us."
In singles play, the Blue Hose won the first match, as
Breno Plentz dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the No. 5 flight. PC extended its lead to 3-0 when Alejandro Bejar defeated
Paul Hogan, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 position.
Gardner-Webb won the next two singles matches, pulling within a point, 3-2.
Maximilian Scholl was victorious in straight sets in the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-4, and
Stefano Puga won at No. 6, 7-6, 7-5.
The Blue Hose were able to clinch the match with a three-set victory in the No. 2 flight before
Adam Schmidt won at No. 4. Schmidt was victorious in three sets, winning the opening set 6-2 before dropping the final set by a 7-5 score. In the third and final set, he won by a 7-5 score.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to get back on track on Sunday, March 25 at Kennesaw State. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
