ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Miljana Ristic recorded a victory at No. 4 singles, but the Runnin' Bulldogs women's tennis team fell to UNC Asheville, 6-1, in Big South Conference play.
The Bulldogs of UNCA swept all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Gardner-Webb's Ristic and
Sandra Bolstad fell, 6-1.
Valentine Limauge and
Sarah Rieckmann were defeated 6-3 in the No. 2 position, while
Daniela Naupari and
Paula Romero won two games but were defeated, 6-2, in the No. 3 flight.
In singles action, Ristic was the lone Runnin' Bulldog to win her match. The sophomore from Nis, Serbia won in two sets, taking the first set, 6-2, before winning the final set by a 6-1 score.
In the No. 3 position, Naupari put a two-set fight but fell, 6-4, 6-3. Bolstad (No. 1 singles), Rieckmann (No. 2), Limauge (No. 5) and Romero (No. 6) all suffered defeats in two sets.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. UNC Asheville earned its eighth victory of the year and first in BSC action. The Bulldogs of UNCA are now 8-4 overall.
Gardner-Webb will now play six consecutive home contests beginning on Thursday, March 15, when USC Upstate visits Boiling Springs for a 2 p.m. match.
