Gardner-Webb's Marinelli Begins NCAA Wrestling Quest Thursday In Cleveland
March 13, 2018 | Wrestling
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Gardner-Webb's Tyler Marinelli will hit the mat Thursday (March 15) at Noon in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division Wrestling Championships at Quicken Loans Arena.
Marinelli (Jefferson, Ga. / Jefferson HS) will represent the Runnin' Bulldogs at 157 pounds, battling Old Dominion's Larry Early in a pigtail match. The two did not meet in Gardner-Webb's dual vs. the Monarchs on November 12, with Marinelli taking a 5-0 decision over Shane Jones in that matchup.
Marinelli enters Thursday's action with a 26-6 overall record and is coming off a very impressive performance at the 2018 Arby's SoCon Championships. Marinelli rolled to the 157-pound title with three decisive wins and enters the 2018 NCAA Championships riding a seven-match win streak. His last loss came on February 1, a 2-0 decision to Duke's Mitch Finesilver – who is seeded 12th in this year's NCAA event.
Early enters with a 27-10 overall record and is one of four Old Dominion wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The winner of Thursday morning's match will advance to face No. 14 Andrew Crone (27-10) of Wisconsin. The loser will fall to the wrestlebacks, which will begin Thursday evening. NC State's Hayden Hidlay (22-0) is the top seed at 157 pounds.
Thursday will be Marinelli's first NCAA Championship match. The redshirt junior has won 54 career bouts with the Runnin' Bulldogs, including 44 combined over the past two seasons. He excelled after moving down a weight class to 157 this season – and is the second 157-pounder in the last two seasons to advance to the NCAA Championships for Gardner-Webb.
Current graduate assistant coach Ryan Mosley advanced last season, winning the Arby's SoCon Championship at that weight in 2017.
Thursday's first round action will air live on ESPNU and the ESPN app, beginning at Noon. The championship consolations will air live on ESPN and the ESPN app at 7:00 pm on Thursday.
