Gardner-Webb Opens Three-Game Series Against Presbyterian with 6-4 Victory

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb softball program won its second straight Big South conference contest with a 6-4 victory over Presbyterian on Friday afternoon.

Andria Booth started the game by getting on base via an infield single and stealing second. A pair of groundouts allowed Booth to move around the base paths and eventually cross home plate, giving GWU an early 1-0 advantage.

The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when Presbyterian (2-21, 0-1 Big South Conference) opened the inning with a single and walk, threatening the Runnin' Bulldogs' lead. The Blue Hose would score three runs in the inning thanks to a total two hits, two errors and a walk.

Gardner-Webb (18-12, 2-2 BSC) would not trail for long as it used a four-run fourth inning to retake the lead, 5-3.

Kaylee Wacaster doubled down the left field line to start things off and advanced to third on a single by Rachel Cumiskey. Cumiskey moved to second when Presbyterian threw to home plate, forcing Wacaster to stay at third.

Katie Stettler reached on a fielder's choice before Annamarie Warley recorded an RBI base hit through the left side of the infield, pulling Gardner-Webb within a run, 3-2.

Maddi Johnson and Booth followed Warley and both batters recorded RBIs. Johnson hit an RBI single to tie the contest at three, before Booth put the Runnin' Bulldogs back in front for good, 5-3, with a 2 RBI infield single.

Gardner-Webb added a run in the fifth, taking a 6-3 lead, but Presbyterian would make a comeback attempt in the top of the sixth.

A two-out double gave PC a runner in scoring position and Presly Bisset recorded an RBI, pulling the Blue Hose to within a pair of runs, 6-4.

Ashley Wark worked her way out of the inning and gave up only a single in the top of the seventh, securing a 6-4 win for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Wark pitched her 13th complete game and gave up just two earned runs. She surrendered only five hits and walked one.

Booth and K. Wacaster led Gardner-Webb at the plate

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 17 at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader with Presbyterian.
