Gardner-Webb Falls to Wofford, 7-4, Wednesday Evening

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Wofford scored a pair of runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings as Gardner-Webb dropped a 7-4 decision to the visiting Terriers on Wednesday night at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 13-10 on the year, while Wofford improves to 15-7 overall.
 
The Terriers took an early lead, scoring once in the top of the first as McClain Bradley stole home plate with two outs.
 
Wofford increased its lead to 2-0 in the second inning as Alec Cargin connected with a single through the right side of the infield to plate Colin Davis, who led off the frame by drawing a walk.
 
Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second.  With one out, the 'Dogs loaded the bases as Mason Fox and Corey Howard were walked by Wofford pitcher Clay Schwaner and Justin Kunz was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
 
Patrick Price hit a ground ball back to Schawner to record the second out of the inning, yet Fox was able to safely cross home plate to set the score at 2-1.
 
Gardner-Webb took its first lead of the night in the third inning.  Taber Mongero led off with a base knock through the left side of the infield and would advance to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Mickey Dugan.
 
Chandler Redmond tied the game on a RBI double to left field that plated Mongero, which was followed up by a RBI hit up the middle by Mason Fox to score Redmond, giving GWU a 3-2 edge.
 
Wofford responded in the top of the of the fourth on a solo home run that just stayed right of the foul pole in left field by Davis to knot the score at 3-3.
 
The Diamond 'Dogs reclaimed the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double to left field by Eric Jones, scoring Dugan all the way from first base.
 
The Terriers answered in the sixth to retake the lead for good, scoring once on a wild pitch, followed by a RBI double by Cargin to give Wofford a 5-4 lead.
 
Wofford tacked on two additional runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Davis and then GWU reliever Langdon Wilson balked with a runner on third base to set the score at 7-4.
 
Gardner-Webb had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Dugan and Jones reached via walks to lead off the frame, but Wofford would not let the potential tying run reach, recording three straight outs to end the inning.
 
Matt Ellmyer (4-0) earned the win for Wofford, working 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts.  Starter Clay Schwarber lasted four innings, giving up three runs on four hits.  Adam Scott worked the final inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced to record his second save of the season.
 
Fox (2-2) took the loss for GWU, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.  Wilson gave up two runs on two hits with four walks in 0.2 innings of relief, while Aaron Stewart and Wil Sellers combined to hold the Terriers hitless over the final 2.1 innings.
 
Cargin (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) paced the Terrier attack, claiming two of the team's seven base hits.
 
Chris Clary (2-for-3) had a multiple-hit evening for Gardner-Webb, collecting two of the squad's eight knocks on the night.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to Big South Conference play this weekend at Campbell, with the first game of the series taking place on Friday, March 23 at 6:00 pm in Buies Creek, N.C.
