DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson jumped out to a 15-0 halftime lead Wednesday evening and captured a 19-3 win over Gardner-Webb in women's lacrosse action.
The Wildcats (5-3) scored seven goals in the game's first 10 minutes and went up 10-0 with 16:43 to play in the opening half on a goal by Sophia Sgroi.
Five goals over the final 10 minutes of the half allowed the Wildcats to reach their halftime lead.
Gardner-Webb (2-7) got on the board with 21:55 left, when Talen Francis netted an unassisted goal to trim the lead to 16-1.Â
Amanda Steinmuller and Emily Gilsdorf followed with unassisted goals over the next 10 minutes to cut the margin to 16-3, but Davidson followed with three late goals for the final margin.
Davidson held a 28-10 shooting edge in the game and finished 17-of-17 on clears. The Wildcats held a 20-15 edge on ground balls, while draw controls finished all even - with each squad controlling 12.
Genna Portner paced Davidson with five goals, and three other Wildcats posted hat tricks with three goals apiece.
Gardner-Webb is back in action this Saturday, March 24, at Coastal Carolina. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Conway, S.C.
