BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team lost by a 4-3 score for the second straight match, falling to the Western Carolina Catamounts in mid-week non-conference action.
"We're right there," said head coach
Jim Corn. "We just needed one point to swing differently, but it was a great effort today. We had chances to win at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. It was a big win at No. 1 and things didn't go in our favor at No. 3. Winning three singles matches was important, and it was an all-around great effort by the girls against a good Western Carolina team."
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-11) dropped the doubles point, but the duo of
Sandra Bolstad and
Miljana Ristic were victorious in the No. 1 flight, 6-3.
As singles play began, Western Carolina (9-5) extended its lead to 3-0 with wins in the No. 6 and No. 2 positions.
Valentine Limauge and
Daniela Naupari would make it a 3-2 match with victories at No. 5 and No. 4 respectively. Both ladies won in straight sets, with Limauge, who is on a four-game winning streak, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win. Naupari won set one, 6-3, and the second set by a 6-2 score.
The Catamounts clinched the match by winning the second set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, but Ristic ended things on a positive note for Gardner-Webb with a victory in three sets at No. 3.
Despite falling in set one, Ristic rallied back for her ninth singles win of the year, taking the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will compete again on Saturday when North Carolina Central visits Boiling Springs. The team will honor seniors
Sarah Rieckmann and
Claire Chase prior to the 2 p.m. match.
