BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team dropped only a single match to the North Carolina Central Eagles en route to a 6-1 victory on senior day.
Prior to the contest, head coach
Jim Corn honored seniors
Sarah Rieckmann and
Claire Chase, both of whom have been four-year members of the program.
"There's always a lot of emotion on senior day. You have a big incentive to win the match," said Corn.
When the action got underway, Gardner-Webb quickly clinched the doubles point. Rieckmann and
Valentine Limauge won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, and the team of
Daniela Naupari and
Paula Romero won at No. 3 by an identical score, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
In the final doubles match to conclude,
Sandra Bolstad and
Miljana Ristic were victorious, 7-5.
As singles play began, Romero cruised to a victory in the No. 6 position, not allowing her opponent to win a single game in either set.
In the No. 3 position, Ristic dropped only one game in opening first set, winning 6-1, 6-0 and extending the Runnin' Bulldogs lead to 3-0.
Naupari continued Gardner-Webb's dominance, winning by a pair of 6-0 scores in the No. 4 slot and clinching the match for the 'Dogs.
Limauge (No. 5) and Rieckmann (No. 2) won the final two singles matches of the day for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
North Carolina Central was victorious at No. 1 singles, winning in a super tiebreaker, 10-5, but the Runnin' Bulldogs won the contest convincingly, 6-1.
"We had a great team effort, which is good to see, especially this time of year," said Corn. "Everybody's starting to click on all cylinders and playing their best tennis. It's a good time of year for that to start happening, and that's what I'm excited about."
Gardner-Webb improves to 3-11 overall with the victory, while the Eagles are 0-14.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at Appalachian State on Monday, April 2. Match time is currently set for 1 p.m. from Boone, North Carolina.
