Diamond ’Dogs Fall to Quinnipiac, 13-3, in Series Finale Sunday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Quinnipiac scored ten runs in the first two innings to go on to hand Gardner-Webb a 13-3 loss on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs now sit a 9-2 on the season, as the loss breaks the team's seven-game win streak.  Quinnipiac improves to 4-5 overall.
 
The Bobcats pounced early, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning.  The first three batters of the afternoon reached safely on a pair of base hits and a walk, setting up a grand slam for Brian Moskey to left field.
 
Quinnipiac added one more in the frame on a solo home run to left field by Ben Gibson.
 
Gardner-Webb looked to answer in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two away as Quinnipiac pitcher Tyler Poulin walked three straight batters, but was able to get out of the jam unharmed, as Mickey Dugan hit a fly ball to left field to end the inning.
 
Quinnipiac took advantage of a handful of Gardner-Webb miscues in the second inning, scoring five unearned runs with two outs.  GWU made a total of four errors in the frame
 
The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-RBI triple to center field by Moskey, and one in the eighth on a RBI double by Anthony Cruz.
 
Gardner-Webb scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Clary hit a solo shot just over the center field wall, his second home run of the season.
 
The 'Dogs would score once in the seventh inning on a RBI fielder's choice by pinch hitter Brooks Veal that plated Justin Kunz, who led off the frame with a base hit up the middle.  GWU also scored one run in the ninth on a RBI groundout by Luke Kaesmeyer, scoring JP McGuire who led off with a triple off of the left field wall, his first collegiate base hit.
 
Quinnipiac finished the day with 15 base hits, with Cruz (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Moskey (2-for-4, HR, 3B, 6 RBI) leading the offensive attack.
 
Gardner-Webb managed seven hits throughout the contest, with Corey Howard (2-for-3, 2B) having a multiple-hit afternoon.
 
Mason Fox (1-1) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, allowing 10 runs, five earned, on seven hits in 1.2 innings.  Langdon Wilson tosses 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, while Carey Spratlin, Aaron Stewart, Caleb Bissette, and Zach Duncan each worked one inning.
 
Poulin (2-1) earned the win on the mound for Quinnipiac, allowing no runs while scattering three base hits in 5.0 innings of work.  He also had eight strikeouts on the day.  Chris Enns allowed two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief, while Robert Lewis and Mike Davis each tossed one inning.
 
Gardner-Webb returns to action this Tuesday evening, hosting Ball State in midweek action.  First pitch is set for 5:00 pm at John Henry Moss Stadium.
