HIGH POINT, N.C. – Gardner-Webb lost at No. 20 High Point Saturday afternoon, 22-3, in Big South Conference women's lacrosse action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-13, 0-5 Big South) fell behind 12-0 over the first 20 minutes of the opening half, before scoring three of the half's final four goals to cut the lead to 13-3 at the break.
Talen Francis scored, unassisted, with 8:57 left in the opening half to get Gardner-Webb on the board, and fired an assist to
Lauren Deaver with 4:43 on the clock to trim the 20th-ranked Panthers' lead to 12-2.
After another Panthers' goal, Francis scored off a free position with 41 seconds left for the halftime margin.
High Point (12-2, 5-0 Big South) scored five times in the first 10 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach.
Francis led Gardner-Webb with two goals and a pair of assists, and added two ground balls and a caused turnover. Deaver scored her goal on just two shots and also collected a pair of ground balls.
Monique Martin led the way with three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, as did
Michelle Hedrick and
Elizabeth Engel.
Abby Hormes led High Point with five goals, while Brooke Stevens had three goals and a game-high seven assists. Erica Perrotta, Kaely Kyle and Haley Roberts also had three goals for the Panthers.
High Point controlled the game with a 36-19 shooting edge and a 13-of-14 success rate on clears. An 18-9 advantage on draw controls and 66.7 percent effort on free position shots also helped push the lead to double figures.
Gardner-Webb will get back to action on the road Wednesday (April 18) at Presbyterian. First draw is set for 5:00 pm on the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
The regular season will come to a close on Saturday, April 21, as the Runnin' Bulldogs honor its senior class on Senior Day vs. Winthrop (1:00 pm).
