Men's Tennis Season Ends in Big South Conference Semifinals
April 17, 2018 | Men's Tennis
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 defeat to the second-seeded Campbell Fighting Camels in the Big South Conference semifinals, on Tuesday afternoon.
"The better team won today," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We play hard but came up short. What stings that we have all this talent here but have to put everything on hold until next season to compete for the championship again. However, since that is our goal, we're going to start our preparations now. It will be difficult to replace our four seniors, and I owe them so much for allowing me to be their coach."
Campbell (16-5 overall) won the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 victories, first in the No. 2 flight and then in the No. 1 position. For Gardner-Webb (10-15 overall), Breno Plentz and Stefano Puga competed in the No. 2 flight, with Maximilian Scholl and Millen Hurrion playing in the No. 1 position.
The match at No. 3 doubles, which saw GWU's Ross Gilbert and Adam Schmidt face off against the Fighting Camels' Louis Monterosso and Lukas Schaefer, went unfinished.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind, 3-0 after Stefano Puga was defeated at No. 5 singles by a pair of 6-3 scores, and Schmidt fell in the No. 4 flight, 6-1, 6-0.
With his team down 3-0, Scholl won Gardner-Webb's first match of the afternoon, defeating Campbell's Lorenz Schwab in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Hurrion's match was the last of the day to be completed, as Campbell clinched the contest with two 6-4 victories in the No. 2 flight.
The Runnin' Bulldogs season came to end, while Campbell will advance to face Winthrop in the tournament championship tomorrow.
