Men's Golf Sits Fourth Heading Into Final Round At Big South Championship
April 21, 2018 | Men's Golf
NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb finished the second round Saturday at the 2018 Big South Men's Golf Championship with a team score of 291, but fell back to fourth in the standings with 18 holes remaining.
Top-seeded Liberty caught fire early Saturday morning and finished with a sizzling 273 as a team to move firmly into first place. The Flames are four strokes in front of second-place Charleston Southern, nine up on third-place Campbell and hold a 10-stroke edge on Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin' Bulldogs sit one stroke in front of High Point in the team standings after 36 holes.
Senior Aaron Thomas continued to play well, firing a 39 to keep pace with the individual leaders. The Gastonia, N.C., native is fourth individually at 4-under par through his first two rounds.
On Saturday, Thomas was unconscious through the first 10 holes, sinking six birdies. He finished with a 31 (5-under) at the turn and birdied No. 10 to move all the way to 6-under par for the day. A trio of bogeys over the final five holes of the day slowed that pace, but Thomas remains in the hunt – just four strokes off the lead.
Steffen Smith carded a 73 to finish in 13th position individually and Chad Phillips matched that score to improve himself into a tie for 25th. Charles Dallery (76) sits in a tie for 17th and Jake Kennedy is tied for 39th heading into Sunday's final round.
The tournament is being held at the 7,120-yard (Par 72) Patriot at Grand Harbor course.
The final round will begin Sunday morning at 8:00 am.
