Diamond ‘Dogs, Mountaineers to Meet Wednesday Night in Charlotte

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb baseball team is set to square off against Appalachian State tomorrow evening in the final game of the 2018 Sunbelt Rentals Collegiate Baseball Series at BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte, N.C.
 
Wednesday's game marks the first time that the Runnin' Bulldogs have played at BB&T Ballpark.
 
Gardner-Webb (24-18) is coming off of a weekend sweep of Presbyterian, taking each of the three games by one run.
 
Corey Howard and Wil Sellers each earned accolades from the Big South Conference for their performances this past week.  Howard batted .563, going 9-for-16 with a double, a home run, and seven RBI to be named the Big South Baseball Player of the Week.  Sellers worked four scoreless innings and recorded saves in each game against Presbyterian, setting the GWU all-time saves record on Sunday, to earn Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week honors.
 
Chris Clary has GWU's best batting average at .352 with a pair of doubles, one triple, and eight home runs.  The junior also has a team-high 16 stolen bases.  Chandler Redmond leads the 'Dogs with 11 home runs and 38 RBI.
 
The Mountaineers (11-28) enter Wednesday's bout after taking two of three games at Louisiana-Monroe this past weekend.
 
Conner Leonard paces the App State offense this season, batting .244 with eight doubles, four home runs, and 20 RBI.
 
Right-handed freshman Jordan Hampton (0-1, 12.27 ERA) will be making his first collegiate start on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
 
Hampton has made five appearances for GWU throughout the season, working a total of 3.2 innings.
 
Appalachian State is expected to start right-handed junior Brandon Boone (2-3, 4.46 ERA).
 
Both teams squared off earlier this season, with the Mountaineers taking an 8-4 decision on March 27 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
 
The first pitch for Wednesday's game is slated for 6:05 pm.
 
BB&T Ballpark, the home of the Chicago White Sox's Triple-A affiliate Charlotte Knights, opened in 2014, located in the heart of uptown Charlotte, N.C.  The state-of-the-art stadium seats 10,200 and features picturesque views of the Charlotte skyline from home plate.
 
The 2018 Sunbelt Rentals Collegiate Baseball Series showcases teams located throughout the region.  Other schools that are part of the six-game series include North Carolina, South Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Davidson and Charlotte.
