Runnin’ Bulldogs Drop 3-1 Decision at UNC Asheville Saturday Afternoon

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb managed just four base hits, while UNC Asheville rapped out 10 base knocks to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs a 3-1 loss on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Gardner-Webb (26-19, 11-9 Big South) snaps a five-game win streak, while UNC Asheville (11-31, 6-14 Big South) earned its first win in six contests.

Asheville plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run by Danny Wilson to left field to take a 2-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh inning.  With one out, Mason Fox reached on a walk, and was later able to advance to third base on a failed pickoff attempt.  That set up a sacrifice fly opportunity for Mickey Dugan, who hit a deep fly ball to right field that allowed Fox to easily cross home plate.

Asheville answered in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring once on a RBI single up the middle by Chris Troost to set the score at 3-1 with tone out in the frame.

Neither team would have a base runner reach after that for the remainder of the bout.

Wilson led the UNC Asheville attack, going 3-for-3 on the day with a double, home run, and two RBI.

Gardner-Webb had base hits from Corey Howard (1-for-4), Eric Jones (1-for-4), Chris Clary (1-for-3) and Taber Mongero (1-for-3).

Greg Gasparro (2-6) earned the win on the mound for Asheville, giving up no runs on four hits while striking out three batters in 5.2 innings of work.  Eric Whitecavage gave up one run on no base hits in 1.2 innings of relief, while Austin Fahr and Kole Harris comebined to allow no base runners to reach in the final 1.2 innings of play.

Bradley Hallman (5-2) was saddled with the loss for GWU, giving up three runs on 10 hits while recording seven strikeouts.  Isaac Campbell tossed a perfect eighth inning, retiring all three batters faced.

Both teams will meet tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm at Greenwood Field to wrap up the series.  The contest will be broadcast live on the Big South Network (www.bigsouthsports.com).
