Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Runnin' Bulldogs Fall at Longwood Saturday In Women's Lacrosse Action

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood scored four goals in the first 10 minutes Saturday, part of an early 9-1 run that fueled a 15-8 win over Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference women's lacrosse action.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-11, 0-3 Big South) fell behind 2-0 in the first 3:30 of the game, but halted that early momentum with a goal from Talen Francis with 25:36 left in the half on a free position opportunity.

The Lancers (6-7, 1-2 Big South) seized control 35 seconds later, going on a 7-0 run that was capped by Emma Johnson's free position goal with 7:28 to play in the half. Gardner-Webb freshman Hailey Maranto took things over to close the half, scoring twice in the final five minutes to make the score 9-3 at the break.

Maranto scored once again early in the second half to trim the lead to 10-4 and Gardner-Webb played even with the Lancers for the final 20 minutes. The freshman duo of Emily Gilsdorf and Eilish Gately combined to score three times in the final 5:49 for the final margin.

Maranto scored a career-high three goals in the game, doing so on just three shots. She added a pair of ground balls. Gilsdorf scored twice and Francis supplied one goal and one assist for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Lindsey Lippert and Gately also scored once for Gardner-Webb.

Goalie Katie Sylvester led the way with six ground balls and had nine saves on the day (31 shots faced).

Longwood held advantages in shooting (31-22), ground balls (37-24) and was a near-perfect 22-of-23 on clears. Gardner-Webb did excel on the draw, controlling a 16-8 advantage. The Runnin' Bulldogs did turn the ball over 29 times, which helped fuel the Lancers' early surge.

The Lancers were led by Katlin Luccarelli's five goals. Charleigh Kondas (3), Molly Barkman (2) and Dana Joss (2) each scored mutiple goals as well. Riley Dolan had one goal and a game-high seven assists.

Gardner-Webb returns home for its next Big South Conference tilt, hosting Radford on Wednesday night (April 11) at 6:00 pm in Spangler Stadium.
