'Dogs Score Twice but Fall to South Carolina in Exhibition Play
August 18, 2018 | Men's Soccer
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gardner-Webb scored twice in the first 18 minutes of its final exhibition match, but four unanswered goals by the South Carolina Gamecocks led to the Runnin' Bulldogs falling by a 4-2 score in its final tune up before the regular season.
"We made some great plays early," said head coach Tony Setzer. "It was nice to come out of the gates with momentum, but unfortunately we weren't able to sustain that for the remainder of the match. It's disappointing to lose, but I've got to give credit for our guys for continuing to battle no matter the score. We'll keep taking strides forward and will be ready for the regular season opener on Friday."
Just seven minutes into the contest, Jack Hoey gave the Runnin' Bulldogs an early lead by converting off a pass from Edin Hernandez.
11 minutes later, after five unsuccessful shots by the opposition, Gardner-Webb would double its advantage over the Gamecocks. This time, Petter Johansen's shot found the back of the net from ten yards away with Jonas Olsaker receiving credit for the assist.
Over the final 30 minutes before the intermission, South Carolina controlled the pace, taking the final eight shots of the opening period. The Gamecocks pulled within a goal in the 35th minute when Kyle Gurrieri scored from 40 yards away off a deflection, cutting GWU's lead to 2-1.
Gardner-Webb took only seven shots in the opening half, while USC attempted 19 shots.
In the second half, the Gamecocks quickly tied the contest with a goal in the 50th minute. 23 minutes later, the home team would take the lead for good as Tucker Monheimer headed in a shot from the near sideline off a cross from Jared Gulden.
The Gamecocks scored their four and final goal in the 78th minute en route to the 4-2 victory.
For Gardner-Webb, Hoey, Olsaker, Ismael Guerrero, and Brian Stepanek all took shots in the final period. Two shots, Guerrero's, as well as Stepanek's attempt in the final minute were on goal, but neither player could convert.
Freshman Grant Glorioso played 73:28 in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs and made three saves. Benjamin Shade played the remainder of the contest. South Carolina's Brian Bilichuck and Ian McGrane each played 45 minutes in goal.
The Gamecocks outshot Gardner-Webb, 22-6, including 8-3 in shots on goal.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play their first regular season contest next Friday, August 24, as part of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. Kickoff between Gardner-Webb and James Madison is set for 7 p.m.
