CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After leading the Gardner-Webb Runin' Bulldogs to a 3-0 win over USC Upstate last week, Jack Hoey and Samuel Catherall have earned weekly honors from the Big South Conference.
Hoey (Bournemouth, UK / Burlington County CC) was named Attacking Player of the Week, while Catherall (Renton, Wa. / O'Dea HS) was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the shutout.
"I'm proud of Jack and Sam for earning recognition from the Big South Conference," said head coach Tony Setzer. "Both of them understand that we win or lose as a team and have a team first mentality. They have been great leaders for our squad this season."
Hoey scored two goals in the victory over the Spartans and is Gardner-Webb's leading goal scorer on the year with three goals.
Against USC Upstate, he netted his first goal in the 19th minute as Oskar Wang crossed a ball to him in the center of the box. The senior forward headed the ball into the net to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 advantage.
Hoey's second goal of the match came early in the second half and was unassisted. He dribbled down the right side of the field and placed a strike into the net from distance, extending the 'Dogs lead to a pair of goals.
On the defensive end of the field, Catherall anchored a Gardner-Webb back line that continually cleared the ball away from the net and towards the Runnin' Bulldogs' attacking half of the field. The GWU defense allowed the Spartans to take only six shots, three in each period. Only three of USC Upstate's attempts were on goal thanks to the efforts of Catherall and the Gardner-Webb defense.
Catherall has seen time in five of six matches this season and has earned the starting nod in each of his appearances. He has played nearly 500 minutes this year, recording 482.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to earn their second Big South Conference victory when they travel to High Point, N.C. to take on the High Point Panthers at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 22.
