Men's Soccer Falls to High Point, 1-0, on Saturday Night
September 22, 2018 | Men's Soccer
HIGH POINT, N.C. – In their second Big South Conference match of the year, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's soccer team managed 11 shots but could not find the back of the net, as the High Point Panthers earned the 1-0 win.
"We had some good looks tonight, but only two of our shots were on goal," said head coach Tony Setzer. "It's always tough to lose a conference match, but we will regroup and get ready for Furman on Tuesday."
Isamel Guerrero took the Runnin' Bulldogs' first shot of the night just 2:54 in the game, but that was the only attempt Gardner-Webb would get for more than 30 minutes.
The Panthers scored the contest's lone goal in the 30th minute. After Daniel Husa saved Jonathan Bolanos' attempt, High Point earned a corner, which was received by Johnny Fenwick who headed it into the goal to give the Panthers the lead.
At the half, High Point led the 'Dogs, 1-0.
In the second period, Gardner-Webb's offense was quiet early, but managed to find its way to its attacking half of the field shortly after 25 minutes of play. Senior Jack Hoey took the Runnin' Bulldogs' first shot of the final period, but could not net the equalizer as his attempt was wide of the goal in the 72nd minute.
Oskar Wang had a shot on goal just 40 seconds later, but it wound up in the hands of High Point goal keeper Keegan Meyer. The sophomore took three shots in the match, with two being on goal.
GWU had four attempts in the final 15 minutes, but none of the four were successful, as the 'Dogs fell to the Panthers, 1-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 1-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big South Conference, while High Point improves to 6-1-0 and 2-0 in conference play.
In goal, Husa made four saves for the visitors, while Meyer saved both of Gardner-Webb's shots on goal.
The Panthers outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs, 13-11 and had a substantial advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Tuesday, September 25, for a 7 p.m. non-conference battle with the Furman Paladins.
