Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – Less than 24 hours after having the match postponed due to weather, Gardner-Webb and George Mason combined for nine goals in the double overtime, non-conference match, with the Patriots scoring the golden goal to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs, 5-4.
"It was a back and forth match with a lot of scoring," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "I'm proud of our guys for battling back and taking the 3-2 lead after being down early . Even when George Mason pulled back in front, we were relentless and managed to force overtime; unfortunately, the end result just didn't go in our favor."
Over the first 20 minutes, the two teams combined for four shots, with George Mason holding a 3-1 advantage in attempts.
Grant Glorioso saved both of the Patriots' shots that came on goal, but GMU's fourth attempt of the afternoon was from "point blank" distance and successful.
Six minutes later, Colin Brezniak scored for George Mason, putting the home team up by a pair of goals, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would get on the scoreboard in the 34
th minute.
Following a foul in the box by the Patriots, Gardner-Webb was awarded a penalty kick, which
Magnus Moldjord placed into the net, making it a 2-1 score.
George Mason held a one-goal lead until just seconds before the intermission when midfielder
Petter Johansen netted the equalizer for Gardner-Webb.
With the less than 15 ticks of the clock until halftime, Johansen placed a shot into the top right corner of the net from 20 yards away, sending the teams to the break knotted at two goals each.
After the 15-minute intermission,
Alain Delgado followed Johansen's lead with a quick goal. Delgado's first goal of the year came just 48 seconds into the final regulation period from 25 yards out and gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first lead of the match, 3-2.
The 'Dogs would hold the lead for less than four minutes as this time it was George Mason's turn to net the equalizer. The Patriots' Tunde Akinlosotu placed a ball into the bottom right corner of the net to even the score at three goals a piece in the 49
th minute.
Over the next 15-plus minutes, neither team could pull in front. For Gardner-Webb,
Oskar Wang's header was wide of the net, while
Jack Hoey had his shot blocked.
In the 66
th minute, George Mason took its first lead since the final minute of the opening half, but it lasted less than 15 minutes, as Hoey received a pass from
Edin Hernandez and converted, striking the ball into the right corner of the net for the equalizer in the 78
th minute.
After Hoey's goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs took the final two shots of regulation, but could not convert as the contest went into overtime.
The physicality showed in overtime, as the first 10 minutes of extra time featured as many yellow cards (3) as shots. The 'Dogs took two of the three shots between the squads, but none of the attempts were on goal, and the two teams headed for the final OT period.
Unfortunately for the 'Dogs, George Mason scored the game-winning goal less than halfway through the final overtime segment to earn the 5-4 win.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 0-4-1 overall, while the Patriots improve to 1-2.
The match featured a combined 37 shots, with the George Mason taking 20 and Gardner-Webb 17. Moldjord, Hoey and Wang each had three attempts for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
In goal for Gardner-Webb, Glorioso, a freshman, received the start and made three saves, while fellow freshman
Daniel Husa entered in relief in the second half and also stopped three attempts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to get into the win column tomorrow when they travel to American University for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
