RADFORD, Va. – Laurits Lillemose scored his first career goal, a game-winner in the 97
th minute, to help the Runnin' Bullodgs improve to 2-0-0 in Big South Conference play with the victory over the Radford Highlanders.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are now 5-4-1 and start 2-0-0 in league play, which had not been done since the 2009 season. The Highlanders drop to 2-6-2 and 0-2-0 in Big South action.
"It's always tough to play at a place like Radford, so it's great to leave here with a win," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "
Oskar Wang got us on the board early, and we didn't quit, even when Radford equalized. It took overtime, but Laurits came up big for us. It's always nice to get a positive result on the road."
Wang, the leading goal scorer for the Runnin' Bulldogs, scored his sixth goal of the season via a penalty kick just six minutes into the match.
Gardner-Webb did not place a shot on goal over the remainder of the first period. The 'Dogs' back line limited the Highlanders to five attempts over the first 45 minutes, and
Daniel Husa stopped both shots that Radford placed on goal, ensuring that the Runnin' Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, Radford sent one shot wide of the goal but netted the equalizer in the 55
th minute when Mouhameth Thiam scored an unassisted goal. He fired the ball past Husa into the upper 90 for his third goal of the season.
After his goal, Thiam took three of Radford's eight attempts in the second half. The Highlanders were unable to challenge Husa in the net. In contrast, Gardner-Webb placed three of its five shots on target, including one by
Dylan Dominguez in the 83
rd minutes. All three of the Runnn' Bulldogs shots on goal were stopped by the Highlanders' Jacob Incera.
After 90 minutes, the two teams remained deadlocked at one.
In overtime, Lillemose took both shots for the Runnin' Bulldogs. His first attempt was saved by Incera, one of four stops that the Radford keeper made on the night. 62 seconds later, Lillemose stuck the ball into the lower left corner to end the game, 2-1, in favor of Gardner-Webb after 97 minutes of play.
Radford took 16 shots, three more than Gardner-Webb, but the Runnin' Bulldogs placed six shots on goal, while only three of the Highlanders' attempts were on target.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Tuesday, October 8 at USC Upstate. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C. where the 'Dogs will look to improve to 3-0-0 in league play.
