Gardner-Webb Starts Cold In 70-63 Loss To Furman Tuesday In Season Opener

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb saw its 14-game home win streak snapped Tuesday night, as Furman held on for a 70-63 win in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-1) fell behind early, but rallied to surge in front midway through the first half. The 'Dogs led by as many as five points late in the half, going up 36-31 on a Justin Jenkins jumper with 2:08 to play before the half.

Furman (1-0) rallied, outscoring Gardner-Webb 6-0 over the final minute to take a 37-36 edge into the locker room after a pair of Noah Gurley free throws with 3.7 seconds left.

The Paladins used a 12-2 run in the second half to open up a double figures lead, surging in front 60-46 with 7:53 to go on a Gurley layup – which followed a long Alex Hunter trey one trip earlier.

Jose Perez and Jaheam Cornwall powered a sizeable Gardner-Webb run to counter, with Perez nailing a three-pointer with 3:40 to play to cut Furman's lead to 60-58 and send a large Paul Porter Arena crowd into a loud frenzy.

Gardner-Webb got the ball back with a chance to tie, but a tough shot was off the mark and Furman went the other way. Clay Mounce converted a tip-in and was fouled, pushing the Paladins lead to 63-58 with 2:37 to go.

The Runnin' Bulldogs went cold from there, missing six consecutive field goals to close the game. Furman made its final six free throws to ice the game.

Perez led all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes played. He was the only double figures scorer for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who struggled offensively to the tune of 38.6 percent shooting and 16 turnovers. GWU missed nine layups in the game, which helped a 38-24 Furman edge in the paint.

Gardner-Webb also made just 64.3 percent from the free throw line (9-of-14). Freshman Lance Terry made all three of his three-pointers en route to nine points.

Ludovic Dufeal turned his first career start into eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in 26 minutes. Cornwall and Eric Jamison also had eight points.

Furman was paced by 18 points from Gurley. Hunter scored 13 points and Mounce added 11 for the Paladins. Leading scorer Jordan Lyons finished with nine points on 3-of-11 shooting and Mike Bothwell scored eight off the bench.

The Paladins shot 46.3 percent for the game, made 14-of-18 free throws and overcame a tough shooting night from long range (6-of-24) with a stiff defensive effort.

Gardner-Webb will hit the road for its next game, traveling to Western Carolina on Saturday for a Noon tip in Cullowhee, N.C. (ESPN+).
