BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Kharrel Medza netted the equalizer with less than three minutes to go in regulation and neither the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs or the Winthrop Eagles were able to score in overtime, as the 'Dogs' regular season finale ended in a 1-1 draw.
"We put ourselves in a spot where we had to come from behind tonight, which is always difficult," said head coach Tony Setzer. "Even though we trailed, we never quit. It's easy to just look forward to the next match, especially with the tournament nearing, but we fought back to earn the point."
The two teams were both scoreless in the first half, although Gardner-Webb put three shots on goal in the opening half.
Gardner-Webb's (8-7-2, 5-2-1 Big South) best look in the opening half came from Meza. The freshman from Houston, Texas entered in the 41st minute and made a run on a ball within 25 seconds of entering the match. He nearly put the 'Dogs ahead, but Winthrop's Chandler Gaunce was able to grab the ball and make one his 10 saves on the night.
Winthrop (5-9-3, 3-3-2 Big South) also had a chance to pull ahead in the first 45 minutes. Jordan Foster's attempt hit the crossbar at the halfway mark of the period, and Husa made his only save of the half, and one of four in the 110-minute match, less than one minute in.
The Eagles took the lead in the 56th minute when Jordan Walshaw scored his team-leading fifth goal directly off a corner kick to put Winthrop in front.
Walshaw had an opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 86th minute, but instead it was Gardner-Webb that got on the board when Medza took a pass from Simen Olsen, made a move to evade a defender, and placed the ball in the upper 90.
Medza placed another shot on goal with 2:10 to go, but it was saved, and after 90 minutes the game was headed for overtime.
The 'Dogs nearly won the game in the first overtime period when Oskar Wang's shot hit the crossbar. The ball appeared to bounce straight down and into the goal, but no goal was awarded. Abel Gebrekiros forced Winthrop's Gaunce to make a save with two seconds remaining, as Winthrop forced a second overtime.
Each keeper made a save in the second overtime, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes.
Gardner-Webb outshout Winthrop, 21-11, including 11-5 in shots on goal.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play #6 Radford in Sunday's quarterfinal contest. The match will take place in Greene-Harbison Stadium at 6 p.m.
