Gardner-Webb Heats Up For 94-70 Win Over Bob Jones Thursday On Education Day

BOILING SPRINGS – Jose Perez scored a career-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds and seven assists to lead Gardner-Webb to a 94-70 win over Bob Jones Thursday morning in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-8) snapped a three-game skid by shooting 49.3 percent from the floor and knocking down 12 three-pointers. Eric Jamison, Jr., added 21 points, Lance Terry scored a career-high 12 points and both Jaheam Cornwall and Kareem Reid had nine points each.

Gardner-Webb did not trail and led for all but 15 seconds – making its first four shots to take an 11-0 lead, GWU made 8-of-9 to start the game on a 22-6 run. Four of those makes were from long range – by four different players – as the 2,000 area elementary school children in attendance were treated to a shooting clinic in the early moments.

The Runnin' Bulldogs stretched the lead out to a comfortable 24 points before settling for a 52-32 lead at the break.

The Bruins (6-6) countered with an early barrage from deep to get the lead under 20 points, but Gardner-Webb was able to clear its bench late after building the margin back to a comfortable range.

Gardner-Webb finished the game with a 34-of-69 effort from the floor (49.3 percent), its second-best shooting performance of the season. That included a 12-of-32 mark from deep (37.5 percent), the fourth time this season the 'Dogs have made at least 10 threes in a game.

In addition to his nine points, Cornwall dished off nine assists without a turnover. Gardner-Webb assisted on 23 of its 34 made baskets and scored 42 points in the paint. A sizable, and expected, rebounding edge (+18) led to a 22-7 advantage in second-chance points. GWU had 17 offensive rebounds, paced by Perez (4).

A defensive effort that produced five blocked shots and 10 steals helped kick start the transition game, as Gardner-Webb scored 14 points on the break. Ludovic Dufeal and Reid each swatted two shots and Christian Turner had three steals.

Bob Jones shot 45.5 percent for the game, bolstered nearly half (28) of its points in the paint. Nate Ellenwood scored 18 points and dished off six assists, Jayson Barnhart scored 12 and Kendall Norrington fought through foul trouble to finish with 11 points and five boards.

Ellenwood made five of the team's nine three-pointers.

Gardner-Webb will now break for Christmas, returning to action on January 2 to begin Big South Conference play at Campbell.
