BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb returns home Tuesday night to host Coker (S.C.) at 7:00 pm, the first home game for the Runnin' Bulldogs since the season opener.
The game will stream live on ESPN+, with Fabian Fuentes and Brendan Boylan on the call.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-5) are riding a two-game win streak after capturing the Mayan Division trophy last week at the 2019 Cancun Challenge, beating UT-Martin and Northern Colorado in Mexico.
After a brutal early season stretch that featured Furman, No. 6 North Carolina, Wichita State and South Carolina, Gardner-Webb saw its offensive game emerge with more consistency in Cancun. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 51.8 percent from the floor over the two games combined, dished off 30 assists and made 17-of-36 from long range (47.2 percent).
Five different players averaged in double figures over those two wins and Gardner-Webb averaged 74.0 points per game as a team. Five men shot 60.0 percent or better over two games, three forwards –
Eric Jamison, Jr. (66.7%),
Kareem Reid (75.0%) and
Ludovic Dufeal (63.6%) – and two guards –
Jaheam Cornwall (62.5%) and
Nate Johnson (60.0%).
Jose Perez narrowly missed a triple-double in the win over UT-Martin, netting nine points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists – and followed with 12 points in the win over Northern Colorado.
Over the last four games, Cornwall has been on fire, shooting 61.8 percent himself to average 16.0 points per game. The Brooklyn, N.Y., junior has made 15-of-21 from three-point range (71.4%) during that stretch.
Coker enters Tuesday's game with a 2-3 record after splitting an early season home-and-home with Limestone and taking a 49-45 win at Wingate on November 26. The Cobras, under first-year head coach Jarred Merrill, are 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play after dropping a 92-61 decision at home to No. 9 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Guard Royce Hunter (18.0 ppg) leads the way offensively, shooting 56.1 perfect from the floor and 40.7 percent from three-point range. He is also a 93.8 parent free throw shooter.
