Gardner-Webb Drops 7-2 Decision at Furman Monday Night

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman plated four runs in the sixth inning, propelling the Paladins to hand Gardner-Webb its first loss of the 2019 season, 7-2, Monday evening.

With the score tied 2-2, Furman (2-3) led off the bottom of the sixth with Sterling Turmon drawing a walk from Gardner-Webb (4-1) reliever Langdon Wilson.  After retiring the next two batters, Wilson gave up a base hit to Jordan Starkes to put runners on the corners.

Banks Griffith followed by belting a double to center field, driving in both Turmon and Starkes, which was promptly followed by a two-run blast to left field by Dax Roper, giving the Paladins a 6-2 lead.

Furman tacked on an additional run in the seventh on a solo home run by Logan Taplett.

The Paladins jumped out to an early lead, scoring on a RBI double by John Michael Boswell in the bottom of the first inning to take an initial 1-0 lead.

GWU squared the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, as Chandler Redmond delivered a solo home run to centerfield, his second home run of the season.

Furman responded in the bottom half of the frame, scoring once on a dropped fly ball to retake one-run lead at 2-1.

The Diamond 'Dogs tied the game once more in the top of the fifth inning on solo home run to centerfield by Justin Kunz, his first long ball of 2019.

GWU finished the evening with four base hits, with Redmond (1-for-4, HR), Kunz (1-for-4, HR), Mitch McLendon (1-for-4), and Taber Mongero (1-for-4) each collecting one base knock.

Furman raked out 12 base hits on the evening, paced by Roper, who was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
