CLINTON, S.C. – Francois Lewis made three free throws with 0.4 seconds left in overtime, and Presbyterian rallied for a frenetic 103-101 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday in Big South action.
Gardner-Webb (15-10, 5-5 Big South) played its sixth overtime game of the season and lost for just the second time. GWU is now 3-1 in league overtime games this season.
The loss snapped a 10-game win streak against Presbyterian, with the last loss to the Blue Hose coming on February 6, 2013 (57-54).
The Runnin' Bulldogs got three free throws from
David Efianayi with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 90 and Presbyterian's Romeo Crouch missed a three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime – Gardner-Webb's third OT game in a row.
After the two teams exchanged leads early in the extra period, Gardner-Webb got a pair of Efianayi free throws, three defensive stops and a layup by
Jose Perez to go up 99-95 with 1:14 remaining.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got two more free throw from
Nate Johnson with 43 seconds left for a 101-97 lead, but the Blue Hose (15-11, 6-4 Big South) caught a break when an out-of-bounds call was overturned after replay review to give Presbyterian possession. Lewis drained a three-pointer with 23 seconds left after an inbounds play to cut the lead to 101-100, setting up a wild finish.
The Blue Hose fouled, and Gardner-Webb missed both free throws with 12 seconds left, leaving the door open. Presbyterian threw the ball out of bounds with just one second remaining, however, and GWU had another chance to seal the game.
Presbyterian's Chris Martin picked off a football pass into the backcourt, however, and was able to signal a timeout with 0.7 seconds left. After the stoppage, a foul was called on Lewis' shot, sending the senior big man to the line for the eventual game winners.
Efianayi led Gardner-Webb with 26 points, Perez finished with 23 points off the bench, Johnson had 19,
DJ Laster finished with 18 and
Jaheam Cornwall knocked down 10 points for Gardner-Webb – which played its second game in a row without injured guard
Christian Turner.
GWU shot a strong 56.1 percent from the floor, made 12-of-27 three-pointers (44.4 percent) and made 25-of-32 free throws (78.1 percent). That free throw percentage dipped to 62.5 percent in overtime, as GWU made just 5-of-8 chances.
The 'Dogs led by as many as eight late in the first half and held off a Blue Hose rally to lead 41-39 at the break after an Efianayi follow shot. Gardner-Webb led by five points with 18 minutes to play in regulation, but neither team led by more than three points until overtime.
Presbyterian shot 52.2 percent from the floor Saturday (36-of-69) and made 19-of-24 free throws (79.2 percent). Lewis finished the game with 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting, pulled down seven rebounds and had five assists.
Davon Bell finished with 21 points and eight dimes, Cory Hightower had 16 points, Adam Flagler scored 13 points and Crouch had 11 points for the Blue Hose.
Gardner-Webb returns home for a critical, two-game home stand next week, beginning Wednesday night against Charleston Southern (7:00 pm). The Bucs whipped GWU soundly on January 26 in Charleston (74-60), limiting the 'Dogs to just 15 first-half points.
Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian will meet once more in the regular season, with the Blue Hose visiting Paul Porter Arena on February 27.
