Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped its home opener today, falling to the Troy Trojans, 4-2, despite wins from
Maximilian Scholl and
Breno Plentz.
Gardner-Webb (0-4) won the opening doubles match of the afternoon, as Scholl and partner
Millen Hurrion, the country's 49
th ranked pairing, cruised to an easy 6-0 win. Despite the win, the 'Dogs were unable to clinch the doubles point as Troy won in the No. 3 flight, 6-3, and squeaked out a 7-5 win in the No. 2 position.
Scholl tied the contest at one with his 6-3, 6-2 singles victory over Troy's Oskar Michalek, but the Trojans would win three of the next four matches to and leave Boiling Springs with their fourth victory of the year.
Troy (4-0) won in the No. 6 position before
Breno Plentz tied the match at two with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Manuel Bernard in the No. 3 flight. Following Plentz's win, the Trojans Christopher Tasker defeated
Johan Fors in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 before Jiaqui Duran clinched the match.
Duran beat Gardner-Webb's
Ross Gilbert but needed three sets to do so. Gilbert won set one, 6-2, but Duran came from behind to keep Troy undefeated through four matches. Duran was victorious in sets two and three, 6-3 and 7-6 (4) respectively.
"It was a great college tennis atmosphere for our home opener," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "It was too bad we couldn't get the win for our fans. Troy is a tough team that is well-coached, and they played better than us today in the big moments. We will use this as motivation for our next match."
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Tuesday, February 12 at Davidson. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
