BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the third time this season, a Gardner-Webb women's tennis match came down to the final singles contest. The Runnin' Bulldogs defeated the Wofford Terriers, 4-3, in a tightly contested match.
Gardner-Webb (3-5 overall) has been victorious in two of the three matches where the clinching point has come down to the final match of the day.
The Runnin' Bulldogs began the afternoon by winning the doubles point, battling back after
Miljana Ristic and
Daniela Naupari were defeated in the top flight.
At No. 2,
Valentine Limauge and
Manon Delsol defeated Wofford's Kay Kluska and Lillie Steryoius, 7-5.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 flight, which pitted
Adrienne Vesely and
Milica Panic against Curran Carver and Brittney Wilbur. The match went into an extensive tiebreaker and featured several match points, but Vesley and Panic were victorious, 7-6 (8), and gave Gardner-Webb a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers (8-4) took a 2-1 lead following the conclusion of the first two singles match at No. 5 and No. 3, but
Daniela Naupari would tie the match with a win for Gardner-Webb at No. 2
Naupari needed just two sets to defeat Cassidy Hicks. She allowed Hicks to win only two games in the opening set, 6-2, and battled to a 7-5 win in set two.
The back-and-forth match saw the Terriers take the lead with a three-set win in the No. 1 flight, but Gardner-Webb was victorious at No. 6 and No. 4 to earn the victory.
At No. 6, Vesely defeated Brittany Wlibur, 7-6 (5), 6-4, while
Mayumi Saguchi clinched the match for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Saguchi battled it out with Kay Kluska in a tiebreaker to win the first set, 7-6 (8) but Kluska won just two games in set two as Saguchi was victorious, 6-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will now turn their attention to conference play with a match against Campbell. The Big South match is scheduled for Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m., but stayed tuned to gwusports.com for schedule updates.
