BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the fifth consecutive match, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis time was victorious. Freshman
Sebastian Harris clinched the match at No. 6 singles as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated the Kennesaw State Owls, 4-3, on Sunday.
"As a team, we have a special group this year," said assistant coach
Matt Parker. "I've been around this program for 10 years, and there's something different about this group. This group has rigor. They work with a passion. You can see it in practice, and it translates to the matches. Everyone who watched today saw that as we fought hard to defeat a solid Kennesaw State team. I'm proud of these guys, especially Sebastian for stepping up and clinching the match for us."
Gardner-Webb is now 5-5 overall and 3-2 in matches that been clinched in the final singles contest. Kennesaw State drops to 4-8 overall.
Kennesaw State won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 but had to battle back due to
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion's 6-1 win in the No. 1 flight. The duo is currently ranked 68
th in the nation.
In singles, Gardner-Webb took the first match to even the score at one a piece. Hurrion, who sits 68
th in nation, cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 flight over Fermin Calvo.
The Owls took a 2-1 lead as Gaston Muhammed defeated
Johan Fors in two sets, but Kennesaw State would get only one more victory as Gardner-Webb won its fifth straight match.
Wins by
Breno Plentz (No. 3) and Scholl (No. 1) in two sets put the 'Dogs ahead, and the final two flights both went three sets.
Kennesaw State made it a three-all match as Sebastian Osorio defeated
Ross Gilbert in a hotly contested battle Gilbert won the first set, 6-1, but was defeated in sets two and three, 4-6, 6-7 (4) respectively.
The final match came down to Harris' battle in the No. 6 flight with Cian Maguire. After falling in the first set, Harris allowed his opponent to win just five games over the final two sets. The freshman from Berkshire, England won 6-2, 6-3 in the final two sets to clinch the match for Gardner-Webb.
The 'Dogs will play its third of four consecutive home match on Tuesday, March 19 when they battle the Limestone College Saints at 3 p.m.
