BOILING SPRINGS –
DJ Laster scored 21 points,
David Efianayi had 18 and
Jose Perez notched his second double-double in a row to lead Gardner-Webb to a 66-47 win over Longwood Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (20-11, 10-6 Big South) won their 14th home game in a row and finished with a 13-0 mark in Paul Porter Arena this season. Gardner-Webb has gone 25-2 in the building since the end of the 2016-2017 season.
Gardner-Webb finished the regular season in a tie for third in the Big South standings with Winthrop, but will be the four seed in the upcoming tournament quarterfinals. GWU's opponent won't be known until the end of Saturday's league action.
Runnin' Bulldogs closed half on 17-1 run to lead 33-21 at the break, despite shooting just 1-of-6 from long range. Laster had 17 of his 21 points before intermission shaking loose from a physical Lancers' defense inside for several easy buckets and dunks.
An alley-oop from
Jaheam Cornwall to Efianayi to start the second half pushed Gardner-Webb in front by 14 points, but Longwood (15-16, 5-11 Big South) slowed the pace down another notch and begin to grind the margin into single digits on a transition three from Damarion Geter with 18:35 to play.
A three on the other end by Efianayi pushed the lead to 38-27 and Gardner-Webb kept the margin at three possession or more the rest of the way. Longwood made a brief push, trimming the margin to 44-37 on a free throw by Jordan Citron with 12:25 left – but Perez drove for a layup with 11:25 left to make the score 47-37 and the margin would not shrink below single digits again.
The Runnin' Bulldogs closed the game on an 11-2 run, with neither team scoring over the final two minutes.
Perez continued his push for Big South Freshman of the Year with a gritty effort – scoring 10 points to go with 11 rebounds and a pair of assists. It was his fourth double-double of the year. He also had a triple-double in early December.
Cornwall just missed a triple-double himself Saturday, going for seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists – with only one turnover – in 26 minutes of action. The Brooklyn, N.Y., point guard had two key assists in a row midway through the second half to switch momentum.
Gardner-Webb shot 46.9 percent from the floor Saturday, but struggled from deep (6-of-20) and the free throw line (14-of-24). The Runnin' Bulldogs did own the glass (+10), pulling down 38 of their 43 rebounds on the defensive end.
Longwood got a team-high 16 points from Jaylon Wilson and 14 off the bench from Jordan Cintron. Leading scorer Shabooty Phillips was limited to seven points, but did finish with six rebounds and two steals.
The Lancers shot just 27.8 percent (15-of-54) from the floor and just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from deep.
Gardner-Webb will play in the 2019 Big South Conference Championships on Thursday night in the quarterfinals. Visit GWUSports.com or @GWU_MBK on twitter for updated bracket information.
